What is a travel document?

A travel document is a piece of a certificate issued by a government or an international organization to assist a person or group of people in traveling across international borders following an agreement between countries.

In order to enter the country, the government of Kenya has put in place some travel entry requirements for visitors. The following are the required types of travel documents you’ll need to present to the airport officials before entering Kenya.

1. Passport

1. Passport

passport types

You must have a valid passport when going out and coming to Kenya. The passport is valid for 10 years from the time issued. Also, note that your passport must have a minimum of 6 months validly from the time entering Kenya.

Visitors need a visa when entering Kenya except that there are few countries that do not require visas to enter Kenya.

See the list of Kenya visa free countries.

You’re required to make your visa application completed. The process usually takes 48 hours, unless if there is a problem with the documents you issued.

With availability to apply for a visa online, you will avoid experiencing long queues at the embassy offices or airport unlike before.

Where to Buy Travel Insurance Online

Travel insurance is an essential aspect when taking a trip, but the problem is affordability and where to buy it. As it turns out, the choices are very slim as the majority of travel insurance companies offer policies at an average of around $500-$700 per policy (roughly for a two-week trip). This cost is too high thus most travelers can’t afford to buy any insurance plan.

After all, no one wants to fork out a lot of money for travel insurance when they have already spent a fortune on flights or accommodation, not to mention the cost of spending money whilst you are away on things like visas, hotel accommodation, and of course daily expenses.

The best idea is to know where to get the right travel insurance that matches your needs. This article will show you exactly the most excellent places to buy travel insurance online cheaply and save your life from uncertainties that come up in your trip.

But first… what is travel insurance and why is it so important?

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance plan that protects voyagers from unexpected financial losses that may occur during travel.
First, it is important to keep in mind that travel insurance is very broad and it falls into two main categories. By categorizing them, you’ll be able to narrow down a policy that perfectly suits well your travel needs. The categories include:

Trip cancellation insurance

If you want to cancel your trip, this plan will repay you the pre-paid non-refundable fraction of your travel cost. It also covers trip interruption, emergency medical expenses, baggage, accidental deaths, and repatriation of remains, travel delays, emergency cash transfer, car rental coverage, ID theft protection, and much more.

Why is having insurance important?

There are many benefits of having an insurance policy as it protects you and your family plus your assets. And as far as traveling is concerned, buying travel insurance is important for many reasons. Here are some of the benefits.
• Insurance keeps you and your entire family safe in case of unforeseen events. For that reason, when you have insurance, you are free from financial l hardships that may arise in the course of the journey.
• Having insurance gives you financial security. You may be rich now, but when something bad happens unexpectedly, all your money is swept away like a strong tornado. This is sad… right? Luckily, Insurance provides repayments so that you and those who rely on you can have some money to depend on.
• Cut stress during difficult times. You can never know what is ahead of your trip. You can get sick, lose your luggage or even death can occur. These tragedies can cause stress; however, by having insurance, you can get reimbursement and therefore cut off financial stress.

Factors to consider before buying travel insurance

It is important to note that when buying travel insurance, you need to take into account some key factors first. Here are some of the considerations you must think about.

Find out what you’re covered for

There are different kinds of insurance to purchase when traveling around the world. Before you buy any kind of insurance, it’s important to know what kind of plan you’re getting into. Travel insurance can be purchased on individual trips or families, and it covers both physical and economic losses when traveling, including medical treatment and lost income due to an accident or delay at the destination.
Read carefully your policy to see whether your needs are all covered in the plan you want to buy, if not, look for one that is best for you.

Consider an annual policy

If you think you might be traveling more in the future, or if you’ve recently received new information that makes you think you may need travel insurance, it’s time to take a look at what’s out there. Look for a policy that offers value – particularly for the additional protection it provides against unexpected expenses and loss or damage to your property.
To help you with your decision-making process, contact an insurance expert who is always available to assist you to make the right choice.

Make sure the company is reliable

To get the most out of your travel insurance, it’s important to find a company that offers comprehensive coverage and is reliable. The type of insurance you purchase will determine what services and benefits are included.
For instance, if you plan to stay in an unfamiliar place for more than three days, it would be important to find out if the company offers travel insurance for this circumstance.
If not, it might be better to look for a dependable company that offers both basic travel insurance and 24/7 emergency assistance at domestic airports and major public transportation systems across the country. It’s better to look for a company that offers both basic travel insurance and 24/7 emergency assistance at domestic airports and major public transportation systems across the country.

Pick coverage based on your needs

The cost of travel insurance varies widely based on where you travel and which type of travel you do. The type of insurance you select also depends on the severity of your return trip problem.
For example, if you’re flying within Kenya and get into an accident while flying commercial, you may be better off with comprehensive travel insurance rather than resorting to civil emergency coverage.
Choosing the right type of travel insurance can be difficult but if you study the industry’s best practices and understand what’s covered under what terms, it becomes easy.

How do you buy travel insurance?

Once you know what you’re covered, know the type of plan you want, and have read the policy, now you can choose the company that you want to reimburse your financial losses once you file a claim, and it is accepted.
The following are some of the most trusted insurance online marketplaces where you can buy travel insurance online.

To sum up

5 Tricks You Can Use to Find a Cheap Hotel room anywhere (the last minute)

Looking for affordable accommodation can be a daunting task particularly if done in the eleventh hour. The best thing to do is to employ a couple of easy actions to find a cheap hotel room, if not you’ll spend more where you could have spent less money.

If you’re searching for suitable accommodation during the last-ditches, let’s in Kenya, you’re likely to find most of them either fully reserved, or some charge high fee, or even worst, the ones available are not at your preferred destination.

But these problems are solvable with some easy tricks. This content will help you out in finding a cheap hotel room; hence, you can save some extra money and utilize it in other travel expenses.

Some links in this post are affiliate links from trusted sources I have personally used. When you buy or make booking through them, I may earn a commission. See my disclosure here.

Use online hotel booking sites

Online booking sites are the right places to find affordable hotel rooms instantly.  These sites can show you available hotel deals and discounts offered during specific dates and times.

Once you are on the website, start by selecting the site you want to search for a low-priced room. On that website page, compare prices by looking at which hotels grants the lowest rates.  Just to make sure that you don’t miss on a great deal, make your reservations right away.

The following are the best hotel booking sites that frequently display great deals on their websites.

Using these online sites may at times show higher deals as compared to the amount a hotel is charging on its website.  Advance your search on the hotel’s site so that you find a rate that matches the fee on the booking sites and also one that fits your budget well.

Do advance booking with hotels that offer free cancellation

Many hotels accept advance booking with free cancellation accepted as well.  Advance booking can help you get the best rate ahead of your stay. While this can give you the advantage of escaping the problem which last–minute reservation brings, it can also be daunting if the hotel you reserved earlier doesn’t allow free cancellation.

So remember to read the term and conditions of the cancellation policy and see how long the policy is applicable. For example, the free cancellation may only be valid for 72 hours.

What’s more, bear in mind that certain hotel that don’t allow cancellation often give a much better discount too.

Bargain with the hotel directly

According to an analysis done by consumer reports, shows that negotiating rates directly with the hotel can give you the best hotel rate. Wondering how to do this?

First and foremost, identity 1 or 2 hotels that you’d like to stay in. once you’ve selected the most preferred hotel, look for their phone number and call them.

Negotiate by telling them about the prices you saw from other sites and wait to see if they can refuse your offer.

Use alternative housing

If you can’t find an inexpensive hotel room that meets your budget, you’re spoiled with many accommodation choices around Kenya.

On Sites such as and homeaway, you find can a room, entire or home and rent it at a good deal affordable than using a hotel room. For example on Airbnb, a single room in Nairobi can cost around $10 per night. But this amount is way cheaper when you compare it to some cheap hotel rooms in Nairobi.

Alternatively, you can stay in a hostel. This is great for budget travelers especially those traveling into or outside Kenya.  Hostels provide private rooms with bathroom and toilet en-suite.

For travelers looking for a serene accommodation to stay in, hostelworld platform is the best place to find affordable rooms in Kenya.

Search  for last- minute deals

If you’re a last-minute vacationer, you find cheap hotel rooms using an app like hoteltonight to enable you discover best hotel on low price.

Priceline and One night app are other great choices. The only downside of these apps is that some of them don’t work in certain areas. OneNight is at the moment offered across 14 cities only whereas suggests tonight hotel deal at 11 am every day.

Get free stay or upgrade room through reward program

Did you know that you can stay in a hotel for free, or live in a high-end hotel room without spending extra money on it? But this doesn’t come from nowhere.

Since most hotels have a rewards program that allows you to earn points, consequently, you can use them for free stays or better yet, stay in a superior hotel room. The good news is that hotel booking sites also offer great loyalty programs to their users.

And the best thing about accumulating your point with booking sites is that you earn points on any hotel and not just one lodge provided that you make a reservation with one specific booking site.

The following are the booking sites with their own loyalty programs.

Orbitz rewards

As a matter of fact, hotel loyalty program is also an ideal alternative all together. If you sign up to be a member in the hotel’s program, you can benefit on complementary internet, flights, car rentals, late check-out and much more perks.

Hilton Honors is a popular hotel loyalty program where you earn point on each stays at their hotel. When you accumulate enough points, you can then redeem them for hotel reward stays.

Stay longer pay less

A small trick such as staying longer like a month or weekly is cheaper as compared to paying for a single day. A case in point is instead of paying for only 1 to 2 days, pay for a whole week which is much cheaper and you’ll cut on budget. The reason why you’ll spend less on long stays is that homeowners prefer visitors who stay longer as means less room makeover therefore cheap for them.

If you check on trip advisor, longer stay is more affordable than short stays.

Choose a hotel away from the city

For all I know, staying closer to the city is often more expensive. Hotel room rates are quite high owing to the high demand driven by large population of people visiting city daily for various reasons.

However you can save money by choosing to stay away from the city, but ensure you choose accommodation with easy access to public transportation and other necessities close by.

In Nairobi, most hotel rooms in city center are very costly; nevertheless, we have compiled a list of cheap hotel rooms for you. Some of them are a bit far from the town center while others take a little walk to reach city center.

Summing up

As you can see saving on hotel booking is much easier by doing searches especially online. Hotel booking sites seem to be the best bet while on the other hand, the loyalty program is also favored by most travelers.
